A proposal to construct a US$1.2 billion gas pipeline from Bangladesh to India is also off.

According to a Unocal official, who declined to be named, “We felt Dhaka lacks political will.” The American company has now downsized its India office and will now concentrate on selling natural gas from its Bibiyana field to markets in the northeast of Bangladesh.

Reports in the Indian media have indicated that the Bangladeshi government have long been hesitant on the project, which it feared would starve the Bangladeshi domestic market.

With the falling through of the deal, along with it went the 1,363 km pipeline from Bibiyana to India. If it had been completed, the pipeline would have had an initial capacity to transport 500 million cubic feet gas per day.
